The Dead @ PNC Arts Center - Holmdel, NJ 6/24/03

The Grateful Dead has reformed ,renaming themselves the Dead out of respect for Jerry Garcia. I my self are Greatful they did so. I saw them last year as the Other Ones, but it fells much better as the Dead. Alright lets get to it . We arrive at the Artcenter at 7:00 the show was suppose to start at 5:00 and did with Steve Winwood opening they played until 6:00 and then there's an hour intermission. I was happy not to had missed a single song of the Deads first set. There were hippies every were it felt good to be back into this scene, I used to follow the Grateful Dead in our area and didn't miss a show.

There were 40,000 people there the venue holds 20,000. The smell of fresh Kind buds filled the air.By the way I did this show sober, not even a beer because of the heat and returning for tomorrows show. They opened with Let the good times roll. Jerry's spot has been filled with Jimmy Herring on guitar and Joan Osbourne on vocals. No one can fill Jerry's shoes but they jumped right in and didn't miss a beat. Bobby Weir is now the captain of this space ship and seems to be enjoying ever minute of it. I have seen him with Ratdog but he's a lot better back with the boys were he belongs. The music sounded great they are recording ever show and selling them by mail at each show. I was happy to buy last night show for $25.00 It was 90 degrees and the Dead still played there 3 1/2 hour set like a breeze loving ever minute of it. Some of the high lights were Give me some loving with Steve Winwood singing lead, a great Fire on the Mountain as well as Cumberland Blues. Joan nailed Maybe it was the Roses .Space seemed to be brung into the 20th Century it seemed to be a done a little harder than usual .I spilt at 10:50 they broke into Not Fade Away the place was rocking . Being into the hard core music scene it was great to revisit my past with a little Dead. Can't wait for round 2 tomorrow night.

From 1 to 10 this show was an 8 the set list was a little disappointing but I am sure tomorrows will make up for it. Everybody seems to be past Jerry's death and I can't wait for all the shows we are in store for.
