System Of A Down & The Mars Volta
@ Continental Arena - East Rutherford, NJ 8/23/05 |
We got there a little late and The Mars Volta were about half way threw their set. The seats where fucking perfect, 5th row side stage, some of the best seats in the house. The Mars Volta has a strange vibe to them, they where like a metal jam band. They reminded me of Pink Floyd but a 100 times heavier. The crowd really seamed to be into them. The place was fucking packed,a sold out house. The strangest thing was everybody was inside checking them out,not outside pounding down cold ones. Their sound was dialed in and their singer Zavala was doing a salsa dance their whole set. Overall the band was good. I was impressed on how many people where into their set. The back drop came down and the crew started to set up System's shit. About 30 minutes later, System takes the stage opening with {B.Y.O.B}. Right of the bat the people in the general admission floor area broke out into a heavy mosh pit. There where people flying all over the place, it was the sickest pit I have ever seen in the Meadowlands and I've seen a couple. The security force earned their money tonight. There where about 40 security guys up front catching the steady stream of crowd surfers. I did see a bunch of people being treated for injuries. System's stage setup was wide open and the sound was fucking perfect. Serj's voice was clear and as powerful as always. Shavo was running all over the stage and at one point fired up a joint on stage, then he jumped up onto the PA speakers and sent security scrambling trying to hold them still. I think the pit was moving the hardest during {The Prison Song}. During their set a fan made it on stage and tried to hug Serj. He was grabbed quickly and ripped of the stage and thrown down the back stairs pretty fucking hard. System's set included a lot of old material mixed with a few tunes from their new album Mezmerize. They closed their set strong with {Chop Suey},{Toxicity},{Aerials} and {Sugar}. I left to beat the crowd when they went off for encore. From a 1 to 10. I give this show a 9. I am a huge System fan and they have always kicked fucking ass live. They are also some of the nicest guys ever. I had the chance to meet and party with Serj at a Ozzfest party a few years back just as they where making it big. For those of you who haven't seen them yet get the Fuck out to one of their shows!!!! By Brandon Dilks Browse All Spotlight Reviews >> Interested in having your Review posted on SoM?
