Deep Purple & Thin Lizzy @ The Beacon Theater - NYC, NY 2/29/04

Thin Lizzy opens with "Jail Break" and the place is 3/4 of the way empty. The Beacon only holds 2000 so figure it out. They go on at 8:00pm sharp and I was really looking forward to seeing them. They did a half hour set of their classic hits ending with, "The Boy's are Back in Town" and they did not even play a encore. As they were finishing up their set the Beacon started to fill up. There performance was nothing special but it was o.k. A bunch of people around me were saying I can't wait to see Thin Lizzy on their own . They are playing a couple of small gig's as headliners in the Tri-State area. I was like you just saw them here opening for Deep Purple what makes you think these smaller show will be better? To each there own I will defiantly skip their up coming shows!!!!!!

Deep Purple takes the stage at 9pm. Mark Coppla introduces them and they open with a song from there new album and I didn't catch the title. They are celebrating their 35 anniversary as a band and their sound is right on for this small venue. One thing about the Beacon is the sound is always great. Ian Gillan is in a robe like yoga outfit, it is very loose and looks as if they were pajamas. His voice was clear but lacked the strength and power it once had. On a few songs he did not even try to hit the unforgettable high notes that made him one of the best singers in the business. I am not bad mouthing Ian at all, when you get his age, can sing for one of the all time great Rock bands and still make it sound great your on TOP of your game. They mix there new album songs with some classics to start, still no Ritchie Blackmore. Deep Purple is on their last run it would have been great for Blackmore to swallow is pride and rejoin Purple. Come on he's playing these small clubs with his wife making peanuts why not rejoin the boys and MAKE SOME FUCKIN MILLION'S if you're looking for some new management look me up!!!!!. Anyhow Deep Purple didn't let the crowd down they wanted old classic and got them. From "Strang Kind of Woman" Ian dedicated to his ex-wife to my Favorite "Perfect Strangers" Deep Purple let them fly I closed my eyes and with enough $6.50 beers I went back to twenty year ago when I had first saw them. Ian announces they will play the entire "Machine Head Album" which they do from "Lazy" To "Smoke on the Water" the people in the Beacon were in heaven for about an hour. They go off at 10:45 I was hoping for a few more songs but it didn't happen.

From a 1 to 10 this show a 7. It was well above average but defiantly below perfect. If you get a chance to catch Deep Purple you better jump at it . The guys are getting real old and I am afraid within the next couple of years there will be no more Deep Purple shows as we know them. They are far from done and are just slowing up a little!
